How I will be protecting my family this summer: 4 must have essentials

As the weather gets warmer, I find my family and I enjoying the outdoors more.  As a matter of fact we have a few trips planned this summer. We are going to go to Iowa for a family reunion, Hawaii, and Vegas.  I am a huge advocate for UV protection, especially when it comes to the eyes and the delicate skin around them.  For this reason I do my best to do as I preach and keep my family as safe as possible when we are outdoors.  Below you will find my favorite essentials to keeping the whole family protected and safe.

Sunscreen– sounds like a no brainer, but I can’t tell you how many times I have left the house without applying sunscreen.  This year since becoming a Mom, I am pretty crazy about applying the stuff on myself, Isabella, and Kevin.  I had been using the generic formula from Trader Joes for a long time on myself, as it was the only brand that I could apply to my face without breaking out.  However, when it came to sunscreen for Isabella, I didn’t know where to start.  So I went to WholeFoods and grabbed the most expensive and most organic baby sunscreen I could find.  Unfortunately, while we were on vacation in February she did NOT do well with the formula.  Her eyes became very red and were burning :(. You want your sunscreen to help you, not harm you.  Luckily, Zeiss gifted me an awesome package that included a handful of sunscreens from Md Solar Science .   I must say, that I am in love with their formulas.  No breaking out, no toxic ingredients, not tested on animals, and most importantly, it worked wonderfully for Isabella. The formula on their Mineral Sunscreen stick was effective yet gentle enough for her sensitive infant skin.  It is my go to and I carry it everywhere.

100% UV protected sunglasses–  Sunglasses are the most protective accessory any one can own.  When they are legit, meaning they have both 100% UVA and UVB protection, they can protect the eyes from early cataracts, macular degeneration, and growths on the whites of our eyes.  Proper sunglasses can also help UV away from the skin around the eyes.  The skin around our eyes make up for 1% of the body’s skin, but accounts for 10% of the skin cancers.  That’s a scary thought!  By wearing your favorite accessory you’re able to be fashionable and safe.  Children needs UV protected sunglasses too.  Their eyes are more vulnerable to UV damage as 80% of the total UV received is under the age of 18.

Children are outdoors more and their eyes are different from adults because their lens is more clear, thus letting in more light.  I can’t tell you how many times Ive been out and see parents wearing their sunglasses, but their children are not.  It is my mission to spread the awareness of UV prevention in children by starting the conversation at a young age.  By creating GlamBaby, a chic line of children’s sunglasses with 100% UV protection, I am able to do so in a fun way.

Hats/Visor:  I am so happy that fashion houses have brought back the popularity of sun hats. Look fabulous and shield the sun while outdoors in your favorite head piece.  I’ve also started putting Isabella in hats so she gets use to them and starts her UV prevention before the age of 1.  Luckily, you can find one you like at any budget.

Zeiss UV protect lenses:  Premium sunglasses with 100% UV protection are the best way to protect the eyes from the sun, however, studies show that only 1 in 4 people actually wear them while outdoors. That’s why Zeiss created UVProtect Technology, full UV protection in clear plastic lenses. Not only is Zeiss the only lens company to offer this technology of up to 400 nm protection, but they include it in every Zeiss lens at no additional charge!  Its a win/win situation when it comes to getting your new eyeglass lenses to choose Zeiss.

Great example under a UV light. I am wearing clear eyeglasses. One lens is made with Zeiss UV protect and the other is not. The Zeiss UV protect lens looks and acts like a sunglass while other lenses do not.
